The best of Oktoberfest

Jew as a traveler, I must admit I had my reservations before you go to Germany for the first time. Two nights and three days of Oktoberfest Monaco di Baviera 2007 for the Hilton. I went for the beer, music, and leather pants. I left with a renewed appreciation for the vibrant Jewish life in this historic city, a fondness for camp and a hangover.

The Oktoberfest has its origins in 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig - the future King Ludwig I of Bavaria - and Princess Therese ofSaxony-Hildburghausen celebrated their wedding. The reasons for the Oktoberfest now called "Theresienwiese" - a term affectionately shortened to "Wiesn". The decision on the delay time is a repetition of the autumn festival and huge local breeds at the same time the following year was the Oktoberfest tradition that has attracted tourists from around the world in the last two centuries. According to the city of Monaco, moved last year 5.7 Oktoberfest million visitors.

Oktoberfest this year began when the mayor of Monaco Christian Ude, said: "Ozapft is!" - "The keg is tapped!" After opening the first beer barrel at midday on 18th September 2010 Schottenhamel Festhalle. The 14 tents party have a total capacity of over 100,000. There are hundreds of trips for adventurers of all ages, including a Ferris wheel, rides, roller coasters and other attractions. Than two weeks> Festival Participants consumed 6.5 million gallons of special Oktoberfest beer produced by the six most famous Monaco: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Lwenbru, Paulaner, Spaten and State Hofbruhaus. Tent dwellers roar German drinking songs, munching pretzels large and down large glasses of beer until the last revelers scandal at home and the cleanup crew is preparing for the next day.

For beer lovers, who keep kosher, we can take comfort in strict compliance with soap in Germanyquality control. The purity law of 1516 was adopted by Duke Wilhelm IV in the Bavarian town of Ingolstadt. The law states: "In all cities, towns and rural areas, only use the ingredients for the brewing of beer, barley, hops and water Who is violated, knowingly or higher under this regulation shall be punished by the authorities of the Court." Seizure of barrels of beer that, absolutely. "By law, Germany, EU integration and mutualPossible deal, the purity longer be enforced as written. However, an old brewery in Bavaria practices are venerated. The use of malted cereals, enzymes and additives are frowned upon and Oktoberfest beer made especially proud of Germany reflects the culinary history.

During my visit to Monaco of Bavaria, I was amazed by the Augustinian camp, but every beer I tried was remarkable for its freshness and flavor. The people I met were incredibly friendly and while drivingaround town, I could learn a lot about Jewish culture that once flourished in the region.

Monaco Jewish life since the Middle Ages. In 1882 King Ludwig II granted to the Jewish community of its central location within the city, so you can build a new main synagogue. The rise of Nazism and the Holocaust decimated the Jewish life in Germany and the tragic murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics has done little to improve in Monaco of BavariaReputation as hospitable to Jews. In recent years, however, the Jews are back in town for their cultural and religious institutions to rebuild. A Jewish community center and Jewish Museum opened in 2007, residents often had a delicious kosher restaurant specializing in German and European cuisine in the same place, and an architecturally stunning main synagogue completed in 2003.

One of the hardest things to visit the Oktoberfest in Munich is Monaco enjoying watching each otherFood. German beer is best accompanied by traditional Bavarian treat - a kosher delight Nighthawks rarely available. Unwilling to give up these delicacies, the team joyofkosher a real Oktoberfest menu, cooked to perfection for Shabbat or a festival beer garden. Bon appetit!
